Do you sometimes wish that you can just go inside the home of another family that homeschools to see how they go about their day? I know I do. Especially during those days when I feel that nothing is going right. You know those days, when you have everything pre-planned but when you start your day, your toddler wakes up with a fever, another child is whining. But you try to go on and tell your older one to go do her math, then she comes back to you and asks for help but you can’t because your baby is currently breastfeeding and you yourself is battling with a sore nipple. Oh, what to do on those days? Do you finally just give up on homeschooling? These are the days when we wish we can find someone to mentor us and help us go on. These are the days when we start wondering, “How do other families do it?”

Well, wonder no more! The “How I Homeschool: Twelve Families Share Their Lifestyle” E-book published by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine shows how twelve different families do it in their homes. Each mother writes about their lifestyle of learning, some are quite detailed in that they tell the readers about their daily routine, another writes about homeschooling and working at the same time. Still another mom,a homeschool graduate herself, also shares her own difficulties in homeschooling her own children and how she was able to overcome it.

“How I Homeschool: Twelve Families Share Their Lifestyle” is a book that will encourage you in your own homeschooling. You’ll read here how every family is different and how they have fit their children’s education with their lifestyle. Every family is differently created by God, so every homeschool is just as different. You’ll read here how each family have struggled and persevered in their homeschool, and how they are blessed by their decision.

“How I Homeschool: Twelve Families Share Their Lifestyle” is a good e-book to acquire in your digital library. The majority of homeschool books that I have read so far focuses on the why’s and methodologies of homeschooling. “How I Homeschool” gives you a picture, or a day in the life of these homeschooling families. It is not meant for the readers to copy but to encourage every family to find their own homeschool lifestyle.

This e-book is available at The Old Schoolhouse Magazine’s Online Store.

Homeschooling versus Public Schools: Which is the Better Option?

One mom who is still considering homeschooling her children posted a question in our yahoo group. She has already done research online and finds all the information overwhelming. After all the research she still isn’t sure how she can start. However, her question really is this: Is it more costly to homeschool compared to just sending her children to their city’s public school?

Her concerns are real and valid for someone just thinking about it. It’s valid for all of us! Considering too, that their city prioritizes the education of their children thereby making education available to everybody. I’ve read an article before where one mother states “Tamad na lang ang hindi makakapag-aral dito sa Makati.” (Only the very lazy ones won’t be able to study here in Makati.) Admittedly, the government of Makati has a very good public school program. Everything is provided for the student, schoolbooks, bags, uniforms, and supplies. We should be thankful to the city of Makati for this. Online casino Ireland. ###

But homeschooling our children is quite different. I won’t dwell on the difference much here because it’s been written about hundreds of times.

HOMESCHOOL AND THE INTERNET

It’s no wonder that someone can be overwhelmed by the information that you can get from the internet. If you google the word “homeschool”, there are over 13 million sites talking about  homeschool. It CAN get overwhelming, I assure you. When I started using the internet for information about homeschooling, I, too, became overwhelmed. I got so many information about it, I did not know what to do. Now, I have . learned to look at homeschool sites with a more discerning eye. I don’t accept each and every information there is about it. However, I learned to separate what was useful for my family and to discard what is not applicable.

I was able to do this by taking some valuable steps for our homeschool. Mind you, when I started homeschooling my children I did not do as much research about it as I should have. The things I did were just to attend a homeschool seminar and speak to a few families about it. I did not read books on how to do it, what are the different philosophies, etc. As my children grew older, with their interests becoming more varied, I had to stop and consider what we were doing. it was only then that I started really reading up on homeschooling.

I found a guide online that you can use for free to help you set up your homeschool. The guide design-your-homeschool is written by Marianne Vanderkolk. It starts with setting your goals, looking at your family and understanding their personalities to help you decide what philosophy of education to use, it will then move on to choosing a curriculum and setting up your home for learning. The guide is here. Honestly, this is just one of those guides that you can use in your own home. The books that I have on my sidebar are also a big help for me.

With regard to the cost of homeschool, cost can be as low or as high as you want it to be. We are fortunate because now there are already several homeschool providers here in the Philippines. You can choose to do it independently, meaning not to enroll your children in any homeschool but keep on teaching them at home, or you can enroll them in a homeschool program that is available now. There are various schools offering different homeschool programs. Some already have a set curriculum that you purchase, some will allow you to choose how and what to teach your children. The tuition varies in every homeschool program but I assure you that it is way lower than enrolling the children in a private school. I found two sites that offer a complete curriculum and these are totally free: Ambleside Online and Old Fashioned Education.

Ambleside Online was created by a group of mothers who believe in Charlotte Mason’s philosophy of education. Charlotte Mason is an educator in the 1800’s but her books and teachings are still alive till now. Her philosophy can be found here.  Ambleside Online has created a complete curriculum from Kindergarten to High School using books that are also available for FREE online. These women have been educating their own children at home using the CM philosophy and came together to create a complete curriculum to help other homeschool families.

Old Fashioned Education is a site created by another homeschool mother who believes that education not only should be free, but that we should use old and good quality books. By old I don’t mean literally old, it just means that books created a long time ago have more quality than the books created now. Old Fashioned Education is also a complete curriculum from Kindergarten to High School . This curriculum is a combination of using textbooks and classic novels to educate your children. Again, most of the books she recommends using can also be found online.

Both of these resources will mean that you can educate your children at only the cost of your internet connection, your electricity, your printer, paper and ink. I have already read several reviews by homeschool families using the Ambleside Online and the Old Fashioned Education curriculum and I assure you that a child educated this way will be a well-educated child indeed.

Taxes on Imported Books Lifted

books

Good news for us purchasing our books from abroad!

President Arroyo has already ordered the lifting of the Philippines law on applying taxes on books that are imported.

Read about it here:  http://budurl.com/philbooktax

Are you aware that anything we purchase abroad and have it shipped here with a declared value of US$50.00 or more are taxed? When I received a box of materials that I will be reviewing, the shipping to Manila cost my vendor over US$50.00. The post office attendant said that even if my vendor declared that the materials have no value and are only used for review, because it cost more than US$50.00 to ship, taxes will still be imposed. So for that box of materials, I had to pay over P2,800.00 or another US$57.00! Apart from that, every time I receive a book in the mail, I have to pay P35.00 for the handling.

This is especially good news for us homeschoolers who like to purchase our books from abroad since taxes can jack up the price of our purchases.

Well, let’s hope that the lifting of this law will be put into immediate effect.

Money Management Tool Review: Kid’s Wealth Money Kit

3 Money Kits with 1 each Game Tracker (Ages 4-6), Activity Tracker (Ages 7-9), Money Tracker (Ages 10-12)

Email: [email protected]

One of the main concerns that my husband and I had for our children was how to teach them to handle their money. Our problem was that we also had to learn to manage our money well. We both felt that we are not equipped to teach our kids the proper stewardship of money that God graciously gives us.

I feel very blessed to have been chosen as one of the reviewers for the Kid’s Wealth Money Kit. The owners have been so gracious that they sent three kits for each of my girls. The children were very excited to open their kits when it first arrived. I, too, was excited to use it. I saw it as a solution to the dilemma we had in teaching them about money management.

Before I introduced it, I already received in my email the ebook “Raising Money Smart Kids”. The ebook, written by the creators, explains the why’s and how’s of the Kid’s Wealth Money Kit. It gave me a deeper reason why I should make it a priority to teach my children about money management. Schools teach about money but not about the practical and wise handling of money.

I started our lesson by summarizing the story of the Kid’s Wealth creators, how they used to be in so much debt, but they determined that they will be able to pay off their debts and improve their standard of living. Not only that, they will also teach their children the right way of managing their own money because they realized that their children are bound to copy their bad practices.

KWproduct

Although I haven’t told my husband much about it, I invited him to join us so that we can both share to our kids what our family’s (our family of origin) money practices are (instant gratification, buy what we can when we can), what our family believed about money (that money is the end all and be all, life is hell without money), and how it is affecting our own family now. From there, I introduced the Kid’s Wealth Money Kit and how we will be using it. Its purpose is to teach kids about money management in a fun and interesting manner. I’m happy to see my husband fully involve and totally interested, since it has been a long-time desire for us to teach our children about the proper use of money.

The Kid’s Wealth Money Kit is an effective tool in teaching children about money management. Notice that I always say “money management” and not just “money”. Our children can learn about money anywhere, but not about money management. The creators, Michael and Elizabeth Da Silva, tell us that it is the parents’ 100% responsibility to teach our children about the wise management of money.

The children are excited about the prospect of receiving their own allowances and deciding what to buy with their FUN money. At first they worried that all their money will go inside the kits that they won’t have any left over. But after some more explaining, they saw that once they place their money in the respective wallets, they will still have money to spend coming from their FUN wallet.

My husband best summed it up this way: He said that if all Filipino children can learn the proper stewardship of money and apply it in their adult lives, this will result in a better future not only for the children themselves, but also for the whole country.

The only downside I can say for this is that the trackers (activity books) are in dollars. But we have easily remedied that simply by ignoring the dollar signs.

If you go to their website, you can download some of their worksheets and a teleseminar that you can listen to online for more information about this product.

Art Curriculum Review: ARTistic Pursuits

ARTistic Pursuits is a complete Art Curriculum written by homeschoolers for the homeschooler. The parent/teacher is not taught how to teach art to her child/ren, but the books themselves teach art to the students. Apart from purchasing or preparing the necessary materials and art supplies, it is practically self-teaching. There’s almost no teacher preparation necessary.

ARTistic Pursuits, Grades 4-6, Book One focuses on drawing. It has 16 Units (Lessons). Every unit is consistently organized so that the students always know what to expect every time. American Art and History are presented in every unit in full color and explained to the student.

My children like it because the lessons are easy to understand and follow. The projects, however, really challenges the student’s creativity. They are not asked to copy the artworks but are encouraged to draw and develop their own styles.

ARTistic Pursuits, Grades 4-6 Book One teaches the students about the Elements of Art and Composition. Students learn how to create their own artwork. The book and website offers suggestions on where to purchase their art supplies and even carry their own art supply packs. However, here in Manila, I did not have any trouble at all in finding the right supplies that I needed. AP Book One can be used for a whole school year.

ARTistic Pursuits, Grades 4-6, Book Two focuses on Color and Composition. This book is organized in much the same way as Book 1, providing consistency and routine in the student’s lessons.

Although, we have not had the chance to use this book yet (I want the children to finish Book One), I have surveyed our local bookstores and art supplies stores to see if the supplies needed are readily available. I’m happy to report that it will not be hard for us to purchase the supplies needed here.

I am amazed at the way the Ellis’s have organized the art lessons. Next to a real-life art teacher, having these books are the next best thing because it’s as if they are right beside you teaching.

As a mom with hardly any art background, even I am encouraged to study it with my children. Artistic Pursuits have taken the mystery out of learning art and have made art available to everyone willing to learn.

Other ARTistic Pursuit Books are:

  • The Way They SEE IT, A Book for EVERY PARENT about the Art Children Make
  • ARTistic Pursuits, Grades K-3 Book One, An Introduction to the Visual Arts
  • ARTistic Pursuits, Grades K-3, Book Two, Stories of Artists and Their Art
  • ARTistic Pursuits, Grades K-3, Book Three, Modern Painting and Sculpture
  • ARTistic Pursuits, Junior High Book One, The Elements of Art and Composition
  • ARTistic Pursuits, Junior High Book Two, Color and Composition
  • ARTistic Pursuits, Senior High Book One, The Elements of Art and Composition
  • ARTistic Pursuits, Senior High Book Two, Color and Composition

Every book can be used for a whole school year. There are more information on how to teach art using ARTistic Pursuits in their website.

A Mother’s Day Gift for Me

Two days ago, when hubby and I were at Glorietta, I went to have a look at the Baby Couture Boutique to confirm if they still have the 50% off on their Mecca collection. I have been wanting to have one of their diaper bags from that collection, but the regular price is just too much for me. Happily, I saw that they still had the bag I liked and it’s still discounted! I showed this to my husband and said that I’d like to buy this bag someday. His only comment was “Don’t worry, you can buy that one of these days.” I wasn’t really thinking of buying it since there’s really nothing extra in the budget for it. So I left it at that.

Yesterday, the children and their dad were talking about getting me a gift for Mother’s Day. Guitar Babe asked her Dad to take her to the mall. Artsy Princess wanted to buy me a gift but she wasn’t sure if she had enough money. Gary D, too, was also seriously considering what he can get for me. The children were in and out of our office talking to me about what they can get me. After some time of this, I suggested to Dad that maybe they would just like to pool their money to get me the gift that I really want. In the past, he always gave me a lovely bouquet of flowers on Mother’s Day. I reminded him that by adding just a couple of hundred pesos, they can get me the bag.

Dad huddled with the kids for a few minutes and all agreed. :)

So here it is finally!

Mother's Day 09 025

Mother's Day 09 029

The bag is huge with a lot of pockets inside. Not only can I organize my own things in there, there’s still enough space for me to bring my children’s things also when we go out together. Though, it’s meant to be a diaper bag, the design is so nice it does not look like a diaper bag. As you can see, I’m already using a separate bag organizer and a number of small pouches, but the pockets all around the bag helped to organize it some more.

I do have one complaint, though. The bag, while still empty, is already heavy. With only my regular stuff inside, it’s heavy to bring along. However, I do enjoy that I have an organized bag. With my other bags, my things are just floating around resulting in my breaking an expensive sunglass.

This is a wonderful gift. Thanks to Gary D, Guitar Babe, Artsy Princess, Sunshine Girl and Flash Boy!

All of you make me love being a Mom!

kinderbachlogo

In keeping with the concept of homeschooling where children are educated at home by their parents, Kinderbach at Home fills the need of teaching music and piano to your preschoolers at home.

Kinderbach was created by Ms. Karri Gregor, a professional musician with years and years of experience teaching thousands of students. Kudos should be given to Ms. Gregor for creating a site that teaches children piano online. It is filled with interesting graphics and activities, no child will be bored with it. She uses interesting music for the child to dance to, several engaging characters in very creative ways. Her activities are also delivered online for you to print for your child. Each activity is very interesting and helps the child to remember the lesson.

When I tried this on my 4 year old, we had a lot of fun with it. It was really funny because I was dancing more than my child at first. I was surprised the next day, she asked to see the lesson again and also danced with her brother. We did the first few lessons but finally had to stop because our keyboard was not working. Too bad. But I will definitely put this on my wish list for my two children.

You'll be needing a fast internet service, a simple piano, a printer and paper to print the activities. No internet or slow service? Don’t fear because you can purchase Kinderbach on DVD and still teach your child piano at home. No idea how to play the piano, much less teach? No problem! Learn along with your child. Kinderbach can also be used in the classroom. Memberships are for the whole family and if you’re not satisfied with it, it also has a 30 Day Money Back Guaranty.

You can try Kinderbach for FREE. All  you need to do is register.

rimelogo (1)

Yes, you read that right. That’s not a typo error. It does say Rime, not Rhyme. The difference between the two words is that Rimes are word families (cat, rat, bat). These words are consistent in spelling and sound. Rhymes, on the other hand, are only consistent in the way the words sound (son, fun).

Rime To Read is an online reading program developed by experienced and highly-qualified educators, Ms. Sara Hines, PhD, Co-Author and Ms. Lynn Klaiman, M.Ed, Co-Author and artfully illustrated by Shari Hookman Berger, B.F.A. Illustrator.

Rime To Read was developed for beginning readers, mostly for those who already know the alphabet sounds. Although I did read some reviews where the child was able to read the words by sight. It consists of 20 online books that your child can either read online or you can print and bind it into a book. Each book is color-coded according to its rime – this helps your beginning reader in recognizing the rime. Every book is built on the last book. It is not advisable for one to read more than one book at a time, but each book must be mastered by the child.

When I received my online membership, my child had just turned 4. I don’t really believe in teaching the child to read so early but I did try it out on her. I printed the first book and placed the pages in my binder and we read together every other day. My child showed a lot of interest in the book and she likes me to read it to her over and over. Usually, she’d bring the binder to me and ask me to read it. But when I asked her to say the words by herself, she had trouble remembering it. We stuck to reading that book again and again. She started to remember the words through the pictures after about two weeks of reading it to her. However, sometimes she was showing some frustration. After this, I decided to just stop and pick it up again after a few months.

I did ask a relative to try it out on her five year old boy. She reported that her son breezed through all the books. Although, her son was already starting to read. She was happy, though, that he read the books quickly.

At this point, I have not yet picked it up again with my daughter. I plan to teach her the alphabet sounds first, then come back to this again. Once I do that, I will update this post with the results.

I have to say, though, that I can see the beauty of learning rimes. The child learns the words according to how the words sound and look like. I feel that this would be much easier for the child as compared to what I had used with my other child previously. I believe that rimes would also help in spelling the words correctly. I am excited to pick it up again with my child in the future.

One of the things that I also appreciate is the manner of delivery-which is online. I see this as a big plus because after payment, you immediately have access to it, and you have a choice of reading it with your child or downloading it by Adobe Reader and printing it. Another interesting feature is their online read aloud feature. If you’re having trouble sounding out the word, you can click on the word and it will be read back to you clearly.

You can try it out before you buy because they’ll give you the first book FREE!

Many of my TOS Crewmates have a lot of good things to say about this reading program. You can view it by clicking below.

HomeWork, An Ebook by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

HomeWork: Juggling Home, Work, and School Without Losing

Juggling Home, Work and School Without Losing Your Balance

by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

Homeschool + Home Business + Home Management = Impossible? Crazy? Can it be done?

You bet it can! HomeWork, an ebook published by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine showcases several families who are doing it all and loving what they are doing. They are homeschooling, managing their home businesses, taking care of their families, all at the same time.

I’m glad I read this ebook because this answered one of those questions that has been nagging at me for the longest time. I’ve always asked myself if I can manage a home business well while also giving my children the best education that they can have. I haven’t an answer to this yet because I have not done it as of this writing. For the families featured in HomeWork though, they have proven that working and teaching at home are ideal partners. It not only provides the income of the family, it also gives the children a safe place to hone their skills and develop their own entrepreneurial spirits. This is such an encouraging book to read. All of the testimonials are written by Christians describing how the Lord has allowed them this kind of a lifestyle. Each family shares how they manage their days. It’s definitely not easy, but it is doable.

This ebook also includes some important ideas to help you in your home businesses. Inside, one can find more treasures in the links that the writers have included for us to study.

Economics doesn’t have to make us quit on teaching our children at home. There are always, always opportunities in crisis, we just need to open our eyes and hearts to find it.

Website Review: HelpMe2Teach.com

Everybody knows that when you search for a topic on either Google or Yahoo, they usually return millions of sites. Out of that, there's only a small percentage that is directly related to the topic that you are actually looking for. This takes up too much of our time. Usually, it's time that we can't afford to take. Apart from that, it's also scary to let our children loose online because of the many inappropriate and unsafe sites out there.

This is what HelpMe2Teach.com tries to solve for us. HelpMe2Teach.com was created by Elaine Taylor, an educator of over 40 years. It aims to provide curriculum and supplementary materials from Pre-K to High School. It is useful for educators, parents, students and homeschoolers alike. HelpMe2Teach.com provides over 2500 safe links to educational websites.

Being an experienced online researcher, I, at first, thought that I won't have much use for the website. I mean, I use Yahoo and Google search all the time and it works for me. I have found so many resources that I can use for our homeschool doing my own research. But I find that using HelpMe2Teach.com has made the search easier for me. It is laid out in a very organized manner. Ms. Taylor did provide a search box within the site, but she also provided a well-organized index with sub-indexes for her members to use.

Here is her complete index:

1. Academic Benchmarks and Standards

2. Animals

3. Arts and Crafts

4. Bible Study and Christian Links

5. Character

6. Computers

7. Cooking for Kids

8. Courtship

9. For Teachers/Parents Only

10. Foreign Languages

11. Health And Safety

12. Holidays

13. Inventions - Printing Press

14. Jewish Curriculum

15. Kites

16. Language Arts

17. Lapbooking and Notebooking

18. Magazines/Student/Student News

19. Mathematics

20. Media

21. Multi-Subject Sites

22. Music and Dance

23. Old and New Testament

24. Olympics

25. On Line Flash Cards

26. Preparing for College

27. Primarily Primary

28. Science

29. Sewing

30. Social Studies

31. Specialty Pay Sites

32. Specialty Topics

Ms. Taylor continues to add links everyday. As I write this, the index has been added to two times. The index makes online research a breeze. Ms. Taylor has gone further by categorizing each website under Primary (Pre-K through Grade 2), Elementary Student (Grades 2-5), Secondary Student (Grades 6-12), and Teacher or Supervising Student. So when your search returns results, one can see immediately if it's useful for your homeschool or educational needs.

Personally, I have found a website for foreign languages that we are using now. I also found, through HelpMe2Teach.com, a free educational site for my children to learn about computer basics and keyboarding. In my personal research, I did not find these sites in the past, but only through this website. She further claims that some of the links provide complete curriculums so that there is no need for you to purchase one.

For parents who are concerned for their children's net safety, they can let their children loose in HelpMe2Teach.com instead of using Google or Yahoo. According to Phyllis Wheeler of Motherboard Books, a homeschool computer curriculum provider (which I'm also set to review), having parental controls on your PC is not an assurance that your children are totally safe. You see, parental controls work by filtering out websites that contain certain words. But some ruthless website creators know that and simply don't use those words. Therefore, there's still a big chance for your children to come across sites that are harmful while using regular search engines for their school work. HelpMe2Teach.com solves that problem because Elaine Taylor has already done all the work for us and provides only safe educational links.

Subscription rates are US$ 29.95 for one year, US$ 15.95 for three months, US$ 9.95 for one month and if you just want to check it out but don't want to spend a lot for it, you can also subscribe for three days at US$ 4.95. Payments are through Paypal and Authorize.net.
