Book Review: TRUECOLORS Series by Melody Carlson

DSC02247

For a change, I am reviewing a series of books that are locally available in National bookstores and other Christian bookstores in Metro Manila.

The TRUECOLORS Series by Melody Carlson, published by Navpress Philippines, is a Christian fiction series for pre-teens and teens. I’ve always wished for Christian fiction to come along and here is a series that is worthy of our time and investment.

DSC02249

Deep Green Color Me Jealous is the story of Jordan Ferguson, a Christian teen, who seems to have everything – she’s a cheerleader, she’s popular and is hanging out with a popular guy – that is, until another cheerleader steals her boyfriend away from her. Becoming extremely jealous, she does everything to try and take him back, even going to extreme lengths to “win”. Her old friend, Kara Hendricks – another Christian teen, stayed loyal to her and tries to help her through her struggles.

DSC02250

Torch Red Color Me Torn deals with the issues of purity and promiscuity. Sixteen year old Zoe believes she’s the only virgin left on the planet. While her friends talk about sex casually, she is described as the only ‘honest-to-goodness’ virgin left among their friends, and she is ridiculed because of this. Feeling the pressure, she decides to do something about it. We’ll see here how this young Christian teen will cope with the pressure with the help of another teen.

DSC02253

Fool’s Gold Color Me Consumed is Melody Carlson’s take on “keeping up with the Joneses”. Hannah Johnson, a missionary kid from Papua, New Guinea, visits her rich relatives in the USA. Her relatives and friends try to catch her up on the latest trends in clothes and accessories. As she tries to keep up with the rich kids, she soon finds herself in the claws of credit card debt. How she crawls out of her dilemma, while keeping her faith in Christ, is a delightful read. This is a pretty humorous story and my daughter, Guitar Babe, thinks its worthy to be produced into a movie.

DSC02252

Burnt Orange Color Me Wasted talks about teenage alcoholism. Amber Conrad, a Christian teen, feels flattered to be invited to the “cool kids'” party one night. Little did she know that alcohol will be served in that party. Without much ado, friends convince her to drink the alcoholic beverages and soon she finds herself enjoying the drinks and the attention. Though she struggles with herself each time, she continues to find herself in situations where she takes drinks with her so-called friends. This story details how a teenager can slowly but surely sink into the depths of alcoholism.

DSC02254

Divorce in a Christian family and how a teenager copes with it is what Bitter Rose Color Me Crushed is all about. Maggie comes home from youth group one night and learns that her father has left home. She is crushed and blames her mom for her constant nagging for driving her dad away. She battles with thoughts of which one to really blame, her dad or her mom? Should she forgive them? In the meanwhile, she also has to cope with each parent moving on with their own lives, thereby changing her family’s life and her own life forever.

DSC02251

Teenage suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in teenagers. This sensitive and real issue is dealt with by Melody Carlson in Pitch Black Color Me Lost. Teenager Morgan thought her life was pretty tough - living with a mother and her 20-year old boyfriend and having a drug addict for a brother. Things come to a head when she finds out that her close friend, Jason, has committed suicide. This affects so many of the students in their school that Morgan and her friends decide to follow Jason’s example. How Morgan survives and even helps her friends through the ordeal makes this an eye-opening and encouraging read.

I have read every book in this series and have cried and laughed with every character portrayed here. It brought back my own memories of my teenage years and the pressure I went through. Melody Carlson writes in such a way that every story is realistic. Every character is a Christian struggling with the realities of teenage pressure. They are all not perfect and we see how they have all succumbed to the pressure. However, in every story, the main character always comes through with a resolution to follow Christ in their lives, with the help of the Lord and availability of praying Christian friends. At the end of every book, there are a number of discussion questions that will make you search every issue deeper.

My 13-year old Guitar Babe also read all the books here and finished it all in ten days! She says that she thoroughly enjoyed each book and she was able to relate with every character. I also had my 10-year old Artsy Princess read FOOL’S GOLD COLOR ME CONSUMED. She narrated the book to me as she was reading it and it was quite funny. This book in particular is a good read even for someone as young as her.

If you want to understand your teenager, I suggest you read the TRUECOLORS Series of books. If you want your teenager to be encouraged, to learn ways to share their faith in Jesus to their non-believing friends, have her/him read this series also. Both parent and teenager will certainly be helped in talking about the issues that plague our teenagers today.

Again, these books are available locally at National Bookstores and Christian bookstores for only P199.95.

These can also be purchased from NavPress online.

Preschoolers

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine has done it again! Preschoolers: Creating a Rich Environment and a Fun Place for Learning is a compilation of wisdom from different homeschool mommies on homeschooling their preschoolers. This is not a book that gives out just mere tips on the how-tos of preschool homeschooling, instead, it gives us solid ideas on the why, how and what of preschool homeschooling.

Some of the topics discussed are field trips, chores, music, preschooling just one, multi-teaching, different activities to do at home (and there are plenty), and how to make your home a rich learning environment for your little ones. The beauty of this ebook is that each homeschool mommy writer is an expert on her topic. So the topic on music is filled with ways to teach music and what kind of music to teach; the field trip topic is filled with ideas on where to take your children; the organization topic is chock-full of ideas to organize your home to make it the ideal place for your little one to learn.

I’m about to homeschool my preschooler and this ebook has given me many, many ideas to use for my Sunshine Girl this year. Although, I must say that a few of the ideas are applicable only for the US residents, I believe that we here in the Philippines can be creative enough to make it work for us.

Preschoolers: Creating a Rich Environment and a Fun Place for Learning is only 85 pages long and can be read in one sitting. You can take this book and start homeschooling your preschooler with confidence immediately!

This ebook will soon be available at The Old Schoolhouse Store. Please click on the Homeschooling with Heart graphic on the middle column of this page to go to The Old Schoolhouse Store.

Book Review: When Love Blooms by Robin Lee Hatcher

0310259282

Publisher: Zondervan

Category: Historical Fiction, Romance

Binding: Softcover

Book & Bible Cover Size: Medium

Page Count: 304

When Love Blooms, a romance novel written by multi-awarded author Robin Lee Hatcher, is the story of a young Christian lady, Emily Harris, who found work as a governess for the two young daughters of Gavin and Dru Blake. Little did she know that Dru, also a Christian herself and terminally ill, had been praying for a long time for a woman like her to come along.

Having grown up in a family with a privileged lifestyle, Emily Harris, had to prove to her wards’ father, Gavin Blake, that she can perform her job excellently and also live on a farm in the country. Despite not being used to performing house work and living in the country, Emily proves herself more than capable of life with the Blake family.

As Emily learns to love the Blake family and becomes a friend to Dru, she also finds herself strangely attracted to Gavin, Dru’s husband. Knowing that what she feels is wrong, she does everything to suppress her emotions while staying true to her commitment to the Blake family and to her Christian faith.

This is the first time that I have read a Christian romance novel by Robin Lee Hatcher and I have enjoyed the book immensely. She writes the novel beautifully, describing the places well, with the emotions jumping out of the book. I appreciate the ways that the characters have developed throughout the book. The way they struggled to live the Christian life is written realistically. All in all, a beautifully written romance novel.

When Love Blooms is available online at

Zondervan, Christian Book Distributors, Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Book Review: Exposure by Brandilyn Collins

0310276438

Publisher: Zondervan

Category: Fiction/Christian/Suspense

Binding: Softcover

Pages: 270 pages

I have to admit that I love books in the Suspense/Thriller category so receiving Exposure by Brandilyn Collins for review is quite a treat for me. It’s the first time that I’ll be reading Christian Fiction Suspense so I am very intrigued by how the writer tackled this.

Brandilyn Collins is known for her trademark Seatbelt Suspense and Exposure does not disappoint. In Exposure, Kaycee Raye lives daily with the fear of being watched by someone she cannot see. Fear and multiple paranoia is a part of her daily life. Despite this, she continues to live her life, trying to conquer her fears and writing about it in her newspaper column. A twist in the story will force her to confront her past in order to save a little girl who needs her help desperately.

Expect high action and psychological thriller in the pages of Exposure. Faith and trust in the Lord is woven in the story so well.

I could not put this book down once I started reading it. The suspense has kept me on the edge of my seat. Brandilyn Collins writes so well and sometimes it really feels like I am right there with Kaycee Raye. I appreciate that the main character goes through a time where she resolves to keep on trusting the Lord to face her fears. This is a well-written book and worthy to be another bestseller! Thanks, Brandilyn Collins!

Exposure can be bought online from

Life and Its Unexpected Interruptions for the Homeschooler

As I have written in my previous blog, I was out for a week because of pneumonia. I was right in the middle of making lesson plans for my children when this happened. This ‘interruption’ will definitely push back my planned schedule to start studying. While I was in the hospital, Artsy Princess and Flash Boy also got sick one after the other. I came home after six days only to find that Sunshine Girl is also starting to cough. Today, she is really down with fever while Artsy Princess and Flash Boy are recovering. I, too, am slowly recovering from my bout with pneumonia. I still cough once in a while and I find myself tiring easily.

A day before I was confined, I received a Facebook message from a pregnant homeschool mom. She was also worried about her children’s schooling because she had to stay in bed for the pregnancy. I wrote her that I will write a blog about this but because of the confinement, I wasn’t able to. Last night I checked and found out that she has lost the pregnancy. This will mean more time away from homeschooling her children because of the time it will take for her body to recover from her D&C operation. More worries for her, most likely.

Isn’t this just what life is all about? It is a life that is full of interruptions. But are these things really interruptions? We have to pause and consider Proverbs 16:9 “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps”. Looking at this verse, I believe that we can conclude that these are not interruptions. Things like these may be unplanned for us, but not for the Lord. The Lord directs our steps, He directs our days and He has a plan for us. Sometimes though, because we are mostly the ones in charge of our children’s education, we are wracked with guilt and worries that we are going to make our children late. We worry that our children will not be at par with others who go to school. We worry endlessly and fear that we are not doing a good job educating our children. But what can you do when illness strikes? When you face a death in the family? When someone in the family is undergoing a crisis and needs your help?

When I was still just a few years into homeschooling, our family went through all these things. We had two deaths in the family, we had to transfer to another house, I got pregnant and was ordered full bed rest from the third month to the seventh month of my pregnancy, we transferred again to another house, our children were confined so many times in the hospital and so many more – it was exhausting! All these in the midst of homeschooling. We had so many interruptions I was tempted to give up! I feared that my kids were getting late. All the stresses that our family went through drove my obsessive-compulsive tendencies even more so that I pushed my children to study more and more. Sadly, this has resulted in two major events: I experienced having a panic attack while teaching them. I was trembling, on the verge of tears, fearing something horrible will happen soon, and all this because of the fear that I was not doing a good job of teaching them. The other major thing that happened was that I saw in my children that they became tired of school. This was because I pushed them so hard, they did not want to study anymore. I had to really stop and search for new ways to educate them and evaluate even my own attitude towards our children’s education.

It was during this time when I sought the Lord some more and asked Him to direct my ways. I learned that “There is a time for everything, a season for every activity under heaven” (Ecc. 3:1). This means that these things happen for just a season in our lives, illnesses, deaths, sensitive pregnancies, crises will not go on forever, it will only affect us for a season. We need to accept it gracefully and even be thankful to the Lord for all that He gives us. Good or bad, these are all from the Lord and He seeks the best for us, always.

Charlotte Mason (1842-1923),a British educator who developed her own philosophy of education while observing the students she was teaching, writes this about the Atmosphere of Education:

”When we say that "education is an atmosphere," we do not mean that a child should be isolated in what may be called a 'child-environment' especially adapted and prepared, but that we should take into account the educational value of his natural home atmosphere, both as regards persons and things, and should let him live freely among his proper conditions. It stultifies a child to bring down his world to the child's level.” (More on Charlotte Mason’s Philosophy of Education here.)

As we can see here, there is educational value in the child’s natural home atmosphere. It is not that we are overprotecting them by opting to educate them at home, instead, we are exposing them to the realities of our families’ daily lives and teaching them how to deal with all that comes to us.

So how do we apply all the “interruptions” that come in our lives and continue to educate our children in the best manner possible? Well, if mom really can’t get up due to a sensitive pregnancy, or she just gave birth, or in the case of the friend I mentioned earlier, had a D&C, then concentrate on teaching them life skills for now. Teach them to help the family out at home, serve and care for mom while she is in bed, older children can take turns caring for younger children. Young children can be taught to keep a house tidy and neat. A veteran homeschool mom that I spoke to before shared that when she had four children one after another, they totally stopped teaching academics to their two older children. Instead, they all worked at home caring for mom, caring for the babies and doing their housekeeping (they never had a helper). Now her two eldest are in college and both are doing very well.

The best part for my family is this, because my husband and I are truthful to our children when it comes to the trials that we go through, they have seen us struggle, they have witnessed our prayers but more importantly, they have seen the Lord’s hand at work in our family. Our family’s faith in the Lord is strengthened.

To conclude, let me live you with this: Wherever you are right now, wherever your child is at right now academically is exactly where the Lord plans you to be.

Laid Up in The Hospital for Six Days

j0430501 I was laid up in the hospital for the whole week last week. I’ve been coughing for about two weeks before that. I’ve been taking antibiotics but none of the meds were working. After two weeks of bad cough, my doctor finally decided to confine me. As it turns out, my chest X-ray proved that I had already developed pneumonia in my right lung. (This is not me in the picture.)

9781600062681 I knew that the room I was to be in did not have any amenities. Since I was in the middle of making our homeschool plans, I brought my planning pages, some of my children’s books, my pen and even more books to read. Unfortunately, my IV was inserted on my right hand, so no writing for me. Instead, I spent my days there reading “How Can A Good God Let Bad Things Happen” by Mark Tabb. I already wrote a review of this book but I’m still about to finish it. Once again, I’m blessed to have read this book at this time. I was getting discouraged with the illness at first and even cried the night before when I realized that I had to be confined. My husband has just started his new job and so we did not have the funds to cover the hospitalization. I asked God why He would let this happen now, when he knew that we could not afford it. Another frustration was the realization that I can’t continue with my homeschool planning, nor can we start our homeschool at the date that I planned.

In “How Can a Good God Let Bad Things Happen”, I learned that the more we undergo trials, the more we are growing. The Lord knows that times will be difficult for us, so He keeps on preparing us for what He knows lies ahead of us. But the more important thing is understanding that when we go through suffering and pain, we are sharing in Christ’s sufferings. And as we endure the suffering and continue to trust in the Lord, we once more defeat Satan as Jesus had defeated him on the cross. Needless, I praised God after reading that on my hospital bed.

089107290X I also had time to re-read Susan Schaeffer Macaulay’s book “For The Children’s Sake: Foundations of Education for Home and School”. This is an excellent book about Charlotte Mason’s Philosophy of Education and how to apply it to our homeschools now. I’m glad to have had a lot of free, uninterrupted time to read this book and I was able to absorb and understand more of Charlotte Mason’s teachings. If you are interested to purchase this book, please look at my sidebar for more information.

burnt_orange For entertainment, I read “Burnt Orange Color Me Wasted” by Melody Carlson, a Christian fiction for and about Christian teens. This book is one of the author’s True Colors series. It brought tears to my eyes but I’m also glad that I read it. I’ll be writing a review about most of the books in the series very soon. I am happy to report that this book and others in the True Colors series are available locally in National Book Stores, OMF Literature, PCBS and other Christian bookstores in Manila for only P199.95.

_80_140_Book.40.cover Another book that’s due for review is John Maxwell’s “Put Your Dream To The Test”. This is an interesting book which sparked a very good conversation between my husband and me. Watch out for my review of this book when I finish reading it.

As much of a booklover as I am, I got bored with all my books after four days. I finally asked my family to bring my laptop so that I can watch some movies, when I am awake, that is. Most of the time I was sleeping.

Sadly though, while I was in the hospital, two of my children also got sick with cough, colds and fever. My mom had to take them to the pediatrician without me or their dad. I felt so helpless, I cannot take care of them, but I had to trust in the Lord for this, I was sick and was worse than they are. My first priority was to get well so that I can go home to my kids.

My doctor sent me home after six days, finally! Through all this, I still continue and praise the Lord for everything. I know that our life and times are in the hands of our Almighty God, no matter what happens.

But what to do about our interrupted homeschool? That’s what my next blog will be all about.
